"Police officers cannot directly experience all the thousands of cases that can occur in the field. The goal is to help them master realistic training situations through augmented reality, and to enable their bodies to respond naturally in emergency situations."

At the '2024 International Security Industry Fair' held at Songdo Convensia in Incheon, Lee Tae-seung, a police officer from the Future Security Policy Bureau of the National Police Agency, explained the development results of a virtual reality training program scheduled to be introduced next year.

He is the project manager in charge of the 'Expanded Reality (XR)-based Complex Terrorism Response Education and Training Testbed Construction Project' that the National Police Agency has been developing since 2021.

This project, commissioned by the National Police Agency to the Naviworks Consortium, aims to develop 10 scenarios based on an advanced virtual training platform.

Currently, seven scenarios have been completed and are being installed at the National Police Agency Training Center and the Police Human Resources Development Institute, and are preparing for a pilot operation. Once development is completed, we plan to distribute it to frontline police stations in the form of mobile training centers, small, medium, large, and comprehensive training centers.

Each scenario was created after consulting with the Police Human Resources Development Institute and frontline police officers, including 112 call dispatch situations, traffic accidents, stalking, and response to unusual motives.

This officer said, "We focused on implementing a training environment that is as close as possible to the actual situation, such as irregular occurrence of various unexpected situations that can occur in a confrontation with a criminal, or the vibration vest reacting when a knife is used during training."

On this day, at the mobile vehicle training center, a training was demonstrated in which four participants surrounded a suspect threatening pedestrians with a weapon while maintaining an appropriate distance, and subdued him using appropriate physical force.

Even while the participants wearing VR devices were instructing the suspect to put down the knife and confronting him, unexpected situations such as pedestrians passing by without paying attention and blocking their view also hindered the trainees. In the end, the police officer succeeded in subduing the criminal who ran towards him, but the voice sensor recognized that he had not properly informed the officer of the Miranda rights, so his score was deducted.

Sergeant Lee Tae-seung said, "Almost all the parts that should be considered in a real situation will be made into an evaluation list and recorded," and "The trainee can check the points that he was lacking in during the training at any time through the internal network. We will make the police organization reborn with better situational response capabilities through the extended reality training."
